This course represents the final two years of clinical training in systemic psychotherapy. It comprises a programme of clinical practice, theoretical and research modules and development of teaching skills.

Course aims
• Develop clinical practice through both live supervision and through supervised work in other agencies.
• The course runs regional clinical supervision groups. These have been in Brighton, Oxford and Harlow.
• Develop a sophisticated understanding of the theoretical models and current debates in
the field.
• Develop skills to work cross-culturally and to explore issues of diversity and difference within clinical practice and in the clinical literature.
• Develop teaching skills through organising and teaching an introductory systems course under supervision.
• Develop an understanding of different research methods and the ability to evaluate research findings. This will also involve trainees in completing a research or theoretical dissertation under supervision.
Is this course for you?
• Conforms to the guidelines provided by the Association for Family Therapy.
• Graduates are eligible for accreditation through the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP).
• Qualified social workers will be eligible for the Advanced Award for Social Work.
• Applicants are expected to hold a professional qualification in social work, psychology, teaching, psychiatry, psychotherapy, nursing or an allied discipline and usually a good honours degree.
• You should have completed an Intermediate level systems/family therapy training.
• You should be working with families in a therapeutic setting for the duration of the course (in some instances we may be able to help with this.)
Time commitment
Two years, two days per month.
One afternoon per week
Beginning of year one - three days Tavistock induction end September plus one week block teaching early October in addition to two day block per month starting end October.
Beginning year two - weekend residential end September
Please note: Time allocated to clinical work is under review for year two trainees - enquire at application.
Assessment
Year one - theory paper, clinical supervisor’s report, clinical presentation to panel and agency supervisor’s report.
Year two - research project, dissertation, teaching portfolio, clinical presentation to panel, supervisor’s and agency supervisor’s report.
• Leads to eligibility membership of the Tavistock Society of Psychotherapists, Systemic Family Psychotherapist Division.
