Doctorate in Child, Community and Educational Psychology (M4)

The course prepares trainees for work as reflective and pro-active educational psychologists to contribute to the advancement of educational opportunities for all children.

Course aims

• Prepare trainees to work in a range of Children’s Services, education, health and social care settings as qualified Educational Psychologists.

The DECP Accreditation Team which reviewed the course in May 2005 reported some of the strengths of the course as follows:

• Supervision and trainee support

• Systemic perspective

• Child and Family perspective

• Multidisciplinary perspective

Time commitment
Three years.
Year one - full time
Year two - two days per week
Year three - one day per week

Assessment

• A Professional Practice Portfolio (years one, two and three)

• Written papers - one for each module:

- Assessment and Intervention

- SEN/Child Development

- The Professional in Context

- Psychological Frameworks

- Research.

• A research thesis (assignments spread across years one - three)

• Professional Placement Practice Assessment.

• Assessment by Tavistock Staff, Fieldwork Supervisors and the External Examiner.

• Leads to British Psychological Society Charter Status.

• Leads to eligibility for membership of the Tavistock Society of Psychotherapists, Allied Professional Division.

Funding
Through the Local Government Employers’ Organisation central funding programme (salary/bursary and fees). Trainees are required to secure Trainee Educational Psychology posts in the public or voluntary sector for year two and three.
