Postgraduate Certifcate/Diploma/MA in Psychodynamic Approaches to Working with Adolescents (M33)

Adolescents pose a challenge to all who work with them. The interaction between biological, psychological and social factors is highlighted as contributing to mental health and disorders. This course explores ways of working with young people and offering an effective service for them.

Course aims

• Develop skills in understanding the communications of adolescents and their family members and in assessing, reviewing and evaluating their work with young people and families.

• Develop skills in understanding your own emotional reactions to the young people you work with and the impact they make on you, and begin to use this understanding to make formulations.

• Reflect on your own functioning with adolescents, regarding the role and function the worker has within their organisation and agency.

• Develop an understanding of the psychodynamic theoretical framework, particularly recent theoretical developments, and its applications to work with young people.

• Develop the capacity to make assessments of interactions and the clients communications and needs within a psychodynamic theoretical framework.

• Explore contemporary developments and practice in relation to working with adolescents and young adults.

• Provides an introduction to the understanding of the psychosocial development, problems and disturbances of adolescence in the first year.

• Multidisciplinary.

Is this course for you?

• Aimed at professionals whose interest or work is with adolescents and young people, including psychiatrists, social workers, probation officers, doctors, nurses, teachers and counsellors.

• Candidates should be working with two young people, one for at least six months and the other for at least six sessions (individual, group work or family work are all acceptable).

• Entry to the Diploma is open to those who have successfully completed the Postgraduate Certificate or an equivalent course.

• Previous students who work with adolescents have found this course a useful experience in managing complex cases.

• This course is also offered in Leeds.

Time commitment
Postgraduate Certificate; 10.00am - 1.00pm, Tuesdays.
Postgraduate Diploma; 10.00am - 3.00pm, Tuesdays.
MA; A further two terms. Minimal time commitment to be negotiated as most of the time is devoted to writing the dissertation.

Assessment
Year one - three academic submissions
Year two - three submissions
Year three - dissertation
