Course aims
• Understand adolescent development and disorders in a variety of settings, ranging from the adolescent as an individual to the various social, educational, work and recreational groupings.
• Gain a psychodynamic understanding of adolescent development which informs all therapeutic approaches.
Is this course for you?
• Training in general psychiatry is required.
• Previous work experience with young people or children is desirable.
• Psychiatric trainees are either salaried staff trainees, have a specialist registrar post in the Adolescent Department or are programme or clinical associates who are required to pay a tuition fee.
• Programme associates attend lectures, seminars and workshops only. Clinical associates are also involved in clinical work.
• Psychiatrists usually come from abroad.
Time commitment
Two years. Part-time programmes are negotiable.
Assessment
• Ongoing assessment through the supervision of clinical work undertaken by trainees who take part in the course as clinical associates.
• Trainees who meet the additional requirements of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy for Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists (M14) will be granted a Tavistock Clinic Psychotherapy qualification on satisfactory completion of the course.
• Accreditation by The Royal College of Psychiatrists.
• Leads to eligibility for membership of the Tavistock Society of Psychotherapists, Allied Professional Division.
