This course is designed for leaders and managers in Social Services, Health Services, Education Services and voluntary sector projects.

Course aims

  • facilitate the advanced study of organisations, their leadership/management and the changing external context in which they operate.
  • develop knowledge and understanding of key areas of leadership and management. 
  • enhance managers capacity to recognise the relationship between ideas and practices, with particular attention to improving outcomes for service users.
  • help managers reflect on and learn from prior experience and combine this with new knowledge to apply to new situations.
  • develop a sophisticated understanding of leadership and management within the context of psychosocial dynamics of oppression, inequalities and exclusion.
  • provide a programme of  professional and academic study for Social Work Managers towards the level offered by the General Social Care Council's Higher Specialist and Advanced Level Awards.

Is this course for you?

  • Intended for managers who wish to extend their leadership and managerial skills and to develop managerial expertise to complement their professional training. 
  • Students completing the course can expect to have a significant career in public services or organisations associated with the public services. 
  • The aim of this course is that graduates will eventually become senior managers in public services or associated organisations right up to the level of chief executive.
  • The course equips students with the knowledge and skills for advancement in leadership and management in the public sector.

Time commitment

  • Part-time
  • Two days per month
  • Thursdays and Fridays 9.30am - 5.30pm
  • Students expected to participate in a 5 day group relations event held in December.

 

Assessment
Via individual assignments and group work assignments that incorporates work-based learning and reflections on practice experiences.
