Specialty Training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (ST4-6) (M2)

This programme provides training to doctors to be Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists. It offers the full range of experience and excellent opportunities in psychodynamic psychotherapy and systemic family therapy.

Course aims

• Gain a thorough training in child, family and adolescent psychiatry.

Is this course for you?

• For psychiatrists who wish to specialise in child, family and adolescent psychiatry.

• Specialty registrar (StR) training, for which you must have membership of The Royal College of Psychiatrists, or for EU candidates a comparable higher qualification in psychiatry.

• Personal suitability for the work is emphasised.

• Opportunities occasionally exist for psychiatrists from overseas to train in aspects of child and adolescent psychiatry (see courses M3 and M14). Such applicants will need to plan carefully how to meet the fees payable by overseas doctors.

• Based at the Tavistock Clinic and covers work in a variety of hospitals and clinics in North London and Hertfordshire.

• Elements of training in Adolescent Psychiatry (M3), Systemic Psychotherapy (M6) and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy for Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists (M14) overlap with this programme.

• Recognised by The Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Time commitment
Three years. Full-time or flexible part-time.

Assessment

• Continuous Assessment throughout. Leads to CCT.

• Leads to eligibility for membership of the Tavistock Society of Psychotherapists, Allied Professional Division.

Funding
Funding is through the London Deanery via the provider NHS Trusts.

The Modernising Medical Careers programme is being introduced in 2007 and the StR Programme will offer training at ST4-6 levels.
