Psychodynamic Approaches to Old Age (D2)

This applied clinical course is the first of its kind in the UK in the field of old age and offers an innovative linkage of work-based practice, observation and theory for professionals working with older adults.

The Trust is exploring the possibility of this course gaining academic accreditation in the future.

Course aims

• Develop your capacity to use psychodynamic thinking in an applied and relevant way within their own professional work setting.

• Enhance your clinical, supervisory and organisational work in the area of old age through experience-based learning.

• Integrate an understanding of early factors in development and their relevance to later life.

• Develop your capacity for close observation in the clinical setting

• Deepen your understanding of the importance of conscious and unconscious communications within staff team and institutional settings.

• Address the challenges and opportunities contained with the National Service Framework for Older People.

Is this course for you?

• Aimed at senior clinicians working with patients, staff and managers in the NHS, social services and the voluntary sector, including clinical and counselling psychologists, old age psychiatrists, nurses, GPs, occupational therapists, social workers, psychotherapists, care home managers and other professionals working in the field of nursing and residential care.

• Tailor-made, in-house workshops and courses are also available for those with a particular emphasis on the training needs of staff working in nursing and residential care settings.

Time commitment
Two years. Tuesday afternoons.

Assessment
Year one - two submissions.
Year two - three submissions.

• A suitable Continuing Professional Development course for clinical psychologists.

• Royal College of Psychiatrists - validation applied for.

• Leads to eligibility for membership of the Tavistock Society of Psychotherapists, Allied Professional Division.
