This course is aimed at practitioners working in the NHS and related areas who are looking for an opportunity to deepen their psychotherapeutic and psychodynamic understanding of their clinical work. Also suitable as an introductory course in counselling or psychotherapy.

Course aims
• To introduce the range of psychotherapeutic work, including different paradigms and modalities within the public sector.
• To develop an understanding of unconscious processes.
• To critically reflect on the importance of primitive ways of communicating in the work setting.
• To define and understand both individual and group processes which interfere with the therapeutic encounter.
• To develop understanding of the relevant aspects of psychodynamic theory.
• To engage students in the application of psychodynamic theory to aspects of their own working life.
Is this course for you?
• Open to anyone interested in the wider understanding of psychotherapeutic work within
the public sector.
• Of particular interest to doctors pursuing careers in psychiatry or general practice, psychologists, nurses, social workers, GP or other NHS counsellors and those working in a helping capacity in social services and the voluntary sector.
• It is expected that applicants will have an interest in the therapeutic and anti-therapeutic factors in helping relationships, and a wish to make a deeper study of these with the aim of improving and developing their practice.
• Some students who are not currently working within a mental health setting may require a specific placement for the duration of the course. They will be offered help in finding and negotiating a placement by one of the course team.
• Approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists, under CPD Module C.
• Recommended as a CPD course by the British Psychological Society.
Time commitment
9.30am - 12.45pm, Tuesdays.
Three, 10 week terms. Two 1 hour sessions, divided by a 40 minute tutorial break.
Assessment
No assessment; no written assignments other than the preparation for seminar presentations.
