Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma/MA in Emotional Factors in Learning and Teaching: Counselling Aspects in Education (D1)

This course focuses on understanding the link between emotional life and success or difficulty in learning and teaching, along with exploration of the psychological problems that children and young people encounter in the course of their development and applying this in educational institutions. It is a continuing professional development opportunity for teachers and others working in educational settings.

Course aims

• Develop greater understanding of the factors which help and hinder the educative process at different stages of development throughout the life cycle.

• Gain an increased awareness of experiences and interactions with troubled and troubling pupils.

• Develop observational skills that will help in working roles within education.

• Explore psychoanalytic ideas and their application in an education setting, for instance in such areas as bullying, school inspection, racism, inclusion and exclusion, special educational needs.

• Gain knowledge of the dynamics at work beneath the surface of groups and institutions.

• Contextualise the task of education with reference to key government policy, eg 'Every Child Matters.'


Is this course for you?

• Suitable for qualified teachers and all others working in both professional and non-professional roles in a variety of educational settings who are interested in continuing professional development.

• Some experience of working within education is preferred.

• All applicants should maintain working roles within education for the duration of the course.


Time commitment

Thursdays, 5.30pm - 9.30pm.
Additional time for reading, tutorials and preparation of academic submissions.


Assessment

• Three academic submissions in years one and two and a dissertation in year three.

• Units of this course may be taken on an individual basis without submitting academic assignments.

• Completion of this course leads to eligibility for membership of the Tavistock Society of Psychotherapists, Allied Professional Division.
