Specialty Training Programmes

Postgraduate Medical Education is a rapidly evolving field. The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust organises, on behalf of the London Deanery, three Specialty Training programmes in Psychiatry:

Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (M2)
This programme provides training for doctors to qualify for Consultant posts in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. It offers the full range of experience and excellent opportunities in psychodynamic psychotherapy and systemic family therapy.

Psychotherapy  (M1 medical)
The Tavistock Clinic-based North East London Specialist Scheme in Psychotherapy involves four sites: the Tavistock Clinic, the Royal Free Hospital (Camden), St. Ann's Hospital (Tottenham), Forest House (Walthamstow).  Trainees spend 1½ years at the Tavistock Clinic and 1½ years at one of the other sites. Each trainee participates in a multidisciplinary training in psychotherapy and is eligible to apply for the BCP accredited Training in Adult Psychotherapy, as well as a CCT in psychotherapy.

Forensic psychotherapy (P4)
This is currently a five year dual accreditation specialist registrar training in forensic psychiatry and psychotherapy held between The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust and the West London Mental Health NHS Trust. The two main training placements are the Portman Clinic and the Three Bridges Medium Secure unit. Completion of training leads to numerous consultant psychiatrist job opportunities in forensic psychiatry settings and allied specialties.

Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (M2C)
There are also two posts at ST2/3 level in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. These posts offer psychiatric trainees the opportunity to gain basic competencies in the field. These posts are linked to the Royal Free Specialty Training in Psychiatry.

All doctors at Specialty Registrar grade follow a comprehensive curriculum as articulated by the Royal College of Psychiatrists and approved by PMETB for these specialties. They are employed as doctors in the Trust and on rotation to training placements in partner Trusts. There is a competitive application process for all appointments, organised by the London Deanery. In all instances, the trainees work as full members of multidisciplinary teams and are encouraged to participate in a variety of other courses within the Trust.

Continuing Professional Development

Postgraduate Medical Education also offers a wide range of CPD activities and courses - at different levels of advancement and intensity - for General Practitioners and Psychiatrists as well as other medically qualified consultants, with a general or specialist interest in mental health or in understanding their clinical or organisational work from a psychodynamic or systemic perspective.

These CPD opportunities, offered either on site or as outreach training, are led by our highly qualified and experienced staff. We provide:

  • an array of courses* and workshops run at the Tavistock Clinic
  • consultation and supervision for individuals or groups of doctors at any stage of their professional life
  • additional training opportunities, such as participating in the work of a number of specialist units**
  • a comprehensive conference programme including topics of general medical interest or aimed at specific medical groups***

The Director of Postgraduate Medical Education is available to discuss specialist interests or outreach training days or events for teams and individuals.
Doctors are welcome to come and discuss their individual or their team's needs.

*      Although many courses lead to academic qualifications, it is possible to pursue all or part of these programmes without completing the academic requirements.

**    e.g. the Fitzjohn Unit offers a dedicated Personality Disorder Service. Other units deals with assessment and consultation, the treatment and understanding of depression, developmental psychopathology, the evolution of disorder over the life span. The Learning and Complex Disabilities Service is an all age service which provides an assessment and psychotherapy service for those with neurological damage, autism and Asperger's syndrome.

***    e.g. we run an Annual Supervision Conference for GPs, a one day conference on ‘Professionalism and Competencies’, regular day conferences on topical forensic themes.
