This course will provide basic understanding of psychoanalytic concepts and child development specifically relating to aspects of work with patients who present with violence, delinquency or sexual perversion.

Course Aims
- to become familiar with psychodynamic ideas
- to understand basic psychoanalytical concepts and child development
- to become familiar with psychoanalytical ideas on delinquency, perversion and violence
- to provide an introduction to understanding what leads people to act in delinquent, perverse or violent ways
- to gain some appreciation of the impact on staff working in secure institutions
Is this course for you?
- The course is designed for professionals from all disciplines working with children, adolescents or adults who present with violence, delinquency, or worrying sexual behaviour.
- Suitable for those more recently qualified in a core discipline (eg in nursing, social care, psychology, probation, art/music/occupational therapy etc) as well as longer standing practitioners who wish to gain a foundation in understanding this patient group.
Time commitment
1 year; 3 terms of 10 weeks, half day per week on Wednesday mornings from 9.45 to 1.15pm
Content
- Observation Seminar: Participants will undertake a weekly observation (first of a young child and then in a forensic environment) and will present reports on a rotational basis to the seminar.
- Theoretical Seminar : Presentation of a range of topics on the understanding and application of psychoanalytical ideas on violence, delinquency and perversion . Some reading will be required.
- Work Discussion: Participants will present issues from their own work environment for the group to think about from a psychodynamic perspective.
Interview
There is no formal interview but all applicants will be invited to meet as a group so that all concerned (staff and participants) can assess appropriateness and suitability for the course.
