Portman Clinic Diploma in Forensic Psychotherapeutic Studies (P2)

This course aims to promote the use of psychodynamic understanding within the candidate’s current professional role. It is not a psychotherapy training but offers the experience of supervised psychodynamic work with an individual forensic patient.

Course aims

• An understanding of the underlying psychodynamics of offending behaviour from a theoretical and clinical perspective.

• Supervision on once weekly psychodynamic work with a forensic patient.

• An increased capacity to assess risk and to work with offenders according to psychodynamic principles.

• An capacity to assist other professionals within the criminal and justice systems and to engender effective communication and collaboration.

• An increased capacity for self-awareness and reflection.

• Experience psychodynamic clinical work with a forensic patient under supervision.

• Candidates will be helped to find a registered British Psychoanalytic Council psychotherapist with whom to engage in personal therapy throughout the course.

Is this course for you?

• Suitable for professionals working in secure units, prisons, social and probation services, the NHS, and therapists and counsellors.

• Suitable for candidates with experience of working with offenders but no psychoanalytic knowledge.

• Suitable for candidates with psychoanalytic knowledge, but little experience of working with offenders.

Time commitment
Two years. One day per week - Mondays (year one), Tuesdays (year two).

Assessment
One written assignment marked each term, alternating between theoretical and clinical papers.
Ongoing formative assessment.
Self-assessment by candidates.

• Leads to eligibility for membership of the Tavistock Society of Psychotherapists, Allied Professional Division.

Funding
Candidates will need to secure funding. Candidates should allow for the cost of once weekly personal psychotherapy.
