Working with Families Where There is a Parental Mental illness

Tuesday 25 November 2008
Fee: £70
Venue: Tavistock Centre, London

The importance of bringing both a family perspective and an integrated approach into work with children in need or children at risk has been emphasized (Every Child Matters 2004, The Childrens Act 2004), as has the requirement to assess the needs of young carers when providing services for mentally ill parents (DOH National Service Framework for Mental Health 1999). Despite this, very few training opportunities exist for professionals in child and adult services to learn together and share practice perspectives, skills and expertise. The family systems approach which addresses the relational contexts for both children and adults and the professional cultures that evolve around them, is ideally suited to this task.

This workshop will be multi-disciplinary, and is suitable for those working in both child and adult services. It is for all professionals working with children in adversity and for those who work in the adult mental health field.

The course aims:

  • To engage professionals working in both child and adult services in developing collaborative practice to support families with parental mental illness
  • To identify risks, vulnerabilities and strengths for children and their parents
  • To develop ways of engaging with mentally ill parents in their goals and aspirations for parenting
  • To enhance practice in working with children of different ages to elicit their understanding of mental illness and its effect on their lives and relationships
