Courses and Professional Training

The Tavistock and Portman is a world-renown provider of specialist mental health training in the public sector.

"The Tavistock is very different to other institutions, I have learnt as much from the teaching methods as from the content." (a former student on Emotional Factors in Learning and Teaching course).

All our courses combine work based experience with theoretical concepts to deepen your knowledge and understanding of therapeutic work. Our training programmes integrate psychotherapeutic approaches to understanding, treating and preventing the conditions which give rise to disabling psychological conditions.

"I've enjoyed the opportunity to take time-out of a busy NHS working day to think and reflect. The supportive atmosphere of both staff and fellow students has been excellent.''  (a former Foundations of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy student).

We draw on the ideas of psychology, sociology, anthropology, psychoanalysis and family systems approaches to underpin our training and clinical work.

Our tutors are all practicing psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses, psychotherapists and psychoanalysts. Many of them work in other clinics, hospitals or therapeutic settings.

Our student population is unique as it draws colleagues from a diverse and multidisciplinary population within the public sector.

"I really enjoyed having the contributions from a number of professions and developing an understanding of their perspective." (a former Applied Systemic Theory student)
