Here at the Tavistock Clinic, we are carrying out the first randomised controlled trial of psychoanalytic psychotherapy in the treatment of refractory depression. Patients who are eligible for the study are those with significant depression who have not responded successfully to previous drug treatment - with or without additional psychological interventions.
Patients taking part in the study are randomly allocated to one of two groups. One group will receive usual GP care, which may include the best available medication and other forms of specialist intervention. The other group will receive eighteen months of once weekly individual psychotherapy, at the Tavistock Clinic.
