Owing to important accountancy rules in the NHS, and to the complex financial relationships between the Trust and Universities, research for training and other research have to be clearly distinguished, just as audit, clinical governance work and R&D spending have to be distinguishable. However, the R&D Director and Associate Director have developed links with the Training Department. We now have regular input to the common annual introductory course offered to all students whose courses contain an empirical research component. In addition we have developed a number of simple instruction sheets covering different aspects of the research process, notably the Data Protection Act, RGF (Research Governance Framework) registration and internal peer review, and ethics committee submission. We are now working closely with the Postgraduate Dean, Academic Committee, Vice-Deans and Course Organisers to promote co-ordination between different levels of research, between the training and R&D functions and to promote the three programmes of research.
