Psychotherapy Evaluation Research Unit (PERU)

This research unit was set up with the generous support of the Tavistock and Portman Charitable Fund, the Tavistock Foundation and the founding fellows of the Tavistock and Portman Society for Outcome Research

  • To develop a pioneering programme testing the value of those psychological therapies, which are among the most widely practised in the NHS
  • To plug major gaps in the knowledge base concerning which therapies work best for whom and for how long

More specific objectives of the unit are to establish:

  • A substantial body of research findings on the evaluation of the psychological therapies
  • An international programme of dissemination of results, including lectures, conferences and publications
  • A greater measure of public and professional credibility for psychotherapy
  • Wider availability of appropriate psychotherapy to those with mental health problems

The unit supports psychotherapy outcome research projects throughout the Trust, including the major Tavistock Adult Depression Study.
