A six-part BBC series entitled 'Talking Cure' filmed at the Tavistock Clinic was shown as part of BBC 2's 1999 autumn season.
The programmes gave a rich and interesting introduction to the work of the Clinic. They demonstrated the unfolding relationship between patient and therapist as they attempt to uncover trauma and restore mental health.
Each programme tackled a different issue:
2nd November
A young man involved in a fatal car crash, tries to overcome the depression he has lived with since the accident. He is assessed for help.
9th November
A physically ill mother with cystic fibrosis is just managing to survive. She has a heart-lung transplant as the only way of surviving. Her predicament and the aftermath of the operation are explored within family therapy.
16th November
A head of a deprived primary school finds the stress of his job overwhelming. Two visits from a Tavistock consultant result in his taking six months sick leave. The programme explores how the school manages.
23rd November
Three year old Conor won't stop biting - what can his parents do to help, and how will their relationship with Conor be affected by the birth of a new baby?
30th November
Baby Damian and toddler Ben give the Tavistock the opportunity to observe the beginnings of the personality. Issues of rivalry, conflict and parental love are explored with clinicians trained in family therapy.
7 th December
Many families find it impossible to come to terms with bereavement. A couple who are mourning their son's death in a road accident, three years before, discuss their bereavement and their adjustment to life without their son.
