The Practice of Infant Observation

Infant Observation, as it has developed from its beginnings in the Child Psychotherapy training instituted at The Tavistock Clinic by Esther Bick, is a discipline which broadens and deepens the observers’ capacity to see what is in front of them. Observing a baby or a small child according to this method develops the emotional and intellectual receptivity of the person who does the observing.

This pioneering piece of work is based on film made by the BBC for a programme in the series on the work of the Tavistock Clinic, Talking Cure. Out of this high-quality film has been produced a selection of teaching tools suitable for introducing the concept of infant observation, for use in discussion of the method and its functions, or as part of a seminar series.

Video 1 is a four-part presentation of fundamental aspects of the observational approach.
Video 2 is composed of brief extracts from the filmed observations on significant themes.

The accompanying booklet offers an outline of the nature and practice of Infant Observation, and some brief commentary on the unedited extracts.

We are most grateful to the Trustees of the Ormonde & Mildred Duveen Trust and The Tavistock Institute of Medical Psychology for their support of this project.
