In the Child and Family Department we see families with children ages 0-16 years who are giving rise to some concern because they are in emotional or behavioural trouble. There may be specific problems like bed-wetting, stealing or temper outbursts. There may be problems in family relationships or educational difficulties, or children may have been bereaved or have suffered abuse. Overall we are concerned with helping children whose emotional development is being hampered, and helping them in the context of their families, their schools and any other agencies involved.
What we offer:
We offer a variety of ways to talk and think with you about the difficulties that caused you to come for help, which will contribute to change. Here in the department we have a variety of professionals trained to work with children and families:
We work in teams of professionals from different backgrounds from which you and your family might see one or more than one person. All staff are trained to very high levels within the field of child and adolescent health. We want families to have the benefit of our different skills and approaches. All our staff are able to help assess the problem and work with you to bring about change. We see people in different combinations: sometimes together as families and at sometimes children and parents individually. At particular times we may have groups available for parents or children. Most appointments are available here at the Tavistock clinic although we have some services available in other locations.
Within the Child & Family Department we run a range of training courses for professionals.
Patient leaflets are available in twelve different languages.
Referrals may be made by GPs, mental health professionals, social workers, health visitors, teachers and other professionals.
