The Bangladeshi Service Child and Family Department

The Bangladeshi Service was set up in November 1996 to try to address the low uptake of child and family mental health services in the Bangladeshi community. Although this community represents 10% of the child population in Camden, contact with local services is well below that of other groups.

What the service offers
GPs, schools, Social Services, voluntary agencies as well as other child and family clinics in the Camden area, refer children and families for a wide range of problems. The clinical work is mainly conducted through home visits, drop-ins at health centers and family centers, and in schools; but families are also sometimes seen at the Tavistock clinic. We offer case consultation to professionals working with Bangladeshi families and training aimed at enabling primary care professionals to work with this community and where appropriate to refer to the service. Developing network links with other professionals and agencies working with the Bangladeshi community is also a part of our work. Currently, we are in the process of expanding the service to those from all Asian communities in Camden and hope to rename the service 'The Asian Service' at the Tavistock clinic.
