Please note, referrals by email are not accepted by The Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust. No patient identifiable information must ever be transmitted or accepted until such time as proper encryption procedures are in place. Referrals are only accepted in writing and are treated confidentially by the specific department or clinic to which they are addressed.
Your referral will be acknowledged in writing. If necessary, we will contact you to obtain further information. Over ninety percent of patients are seen within thirteen weeks of referral.
Every accepted patient or family undergoes a comprehensive therapeutic assessment, usually consisting of up to six appointments (in appropriate cases more appointments may be offered). Where appropriate, professional network meetings may form part of the assessment. At the end of the assessment we will write to you, describing the work, and giving you our recommendations.
Details of our assessment and treatment programmes are provided below.
We will provide you with interim reports during treatment, and you will be informed in writing at the conclusion of treatment.
We are committed to working in consultation with the patient's GP, referrer and other members of the professional network. We will respond promptly to any questions you may have about the assessment or treatment.
We aim to work flexibly, tailoring our service to the needs and circumstances of the individual patient or family. Our therapeutic work focuses on facilitating understanding and change in troubled and disturbed individuals and families.
In all cases the length of treatment depends on the individual case.
Generally, the following forms of assessment and treatment may be offered to patients:
Assessments are comprehensive and intended to be helpful in their own right, usually consisting of up to six appointments, over a varying period of time. Appointments are offered to whichever combination of family members is appropriate to the case. Treatment recommendations will be made to the referrer and GP, and discussed with the patient or family.
Treatment patterns differ according to clinical need. This means that the family may be seen at the same time, or family members may be seen individually. Some members may be seen more than others, and more than one clinician more work with the family.
Appointments may be offered at varying intervals, from weekly to monthly or more.
The patient is seen on his/her own. Appointments are usually offered once-weekly, although appointments may be offered on a less frequent basis. Where the referred patient is a child, it is expected that some work may also take place with family members.
The patient is seen on his/her own, but more than once a week. Appointments are usually offered twice or three times a week, and occasionally on a more intensive basis.
In some cases, the assessment may recommend a limited course of further treatment (of around sixteen appointments) over a brief period of time.
A variety of approaches to group work are available for all ages. Patients are seen in carefully selected groupings related to their problems or experiences. Appointments are usually offered once a week. Groups meet for a minumum period of one year.
All of these forms of treatment include network meetings with professionals, and consultation to referrers as appropriate and according to clinical need.
Some of our staff are involved in post-graduate training. Staff training with us are already experienced professionals who have chosen to develop their skills and experience in therapeutic approaches in mental health and social care. Our training is renowned for its quality control and supervision.
The Trust has a well developed CPA policy in line with NHS guidelines. The majority of our patients are at the standard level of CPA, which requires that all appropriate clinical procedures have been completed and are recorded in the case notes. For those patients who are more troubled and need to be in the enhanced Care Programme, we have made arrangements for this to be organized in cooperation with the appropriate Community Mental Health team.
