Information for New Patients / Users

The Tavistock Clinic provides a range of mental health services on an outpatient basis.

If you have any concerns about your treatment that cannot be dealt with by your clinician please contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS)

Babies, children, parents and families

Therapeutic consultations for parents or carers with (or without) their infants are provided in the Infant Mental Health Service. Children under 5 who are in contact with child protection services may be seen with their parents and carers at the Monroe Young Family Centre. Older children are seen, always with their parents or carers in the first instance, in the Child and Family Department, which also includes a special therapeutic service for those with learning disabilities and for children with autism and related problems (service for autism and related disorders). There are also specialist services for children and their families, for refugees, for Bangladeshi and for Somali families, children who are about to be, or have been, fostered or adopted, and a day school for children under 12 with serious emotional and behavioural disorders (The Tavistock Mulberry Bush Day Unit).

Children who have longstanding uncertainty about their sexual identity can be seen in the Gender Identity Development Service.

Parents may be seen without their children in any department (Child and Family, Adolescent, Adult) of the Tavistock Clinic.

Adolescents and young adults

May refer themselves for brief therapeutic consultations (Young People's Consultaion Service 16-30), which is part of the Adolescent Department (age 16-21), which provides longer term psychotherapy for young people and their families. There are dedicated services for young people suffering the after effects of trauma and for those with learning disabilities. People over 21 requiring an assessment for psychotherapy should be referred to the Adult Department.

People of any age who are troubled by criminal or violent behaviour or disturbing sexual behaviour or experiences are seen in the Portman Clinic, an adjacent clinic to the Tavistock Clinic.

Adults, couples and people in later life

Are seen in the Adult Department, a specialised clinic for psychotherapeutic treatment. All individuals or couples are offered a consultation within weeks of referral. The main treatment for individuals is weekly psychotherapy either alone with a therapist, or in a group of other patients, with a therapist. There is usually a waiting list for longer term therapy. There are also specialist services for older people, for people with longstanding personality problems and serious difficulties in relationships (Fitzjohn's Unit), and for those suffering the after effects of trauma. There is a dedicated service for people with learning disabilities.
