The Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust Library

A view of the library

The Tavistock and Portman NHS Library was formally set up
in 1946. The collection included material held by the Tavistock
Clinic dating from when it was originally established to counsel
shell shocked victims from the First World War. The Library in
its current form was re-launched in 1999 by the Secretary of
State for Health as a national resource for mental health and
is nationally recognised as a leading UK therapeutic resource.

The Tavistock & Portman Library's resources reflect the
multidisciplinary approach of the Tavistock & Portman NHS Trust
and span all aspects of the behavioural sciences. The main
disciplines covered includes psychotherapy, psychoanalysis,
family therapy, psychiatry, clinical psychology, educational
psychology, social work & the study of organisations.
