Knowledge & training

International Students

In this section:

Both the Tavistock Centre and the Portman Clinic have a long and valued tradition of offering training to mental health professionals from overseas. We offer creative professional development to professionals who are able to take sabbatical leave in the UK from overseas.

There are three options of attachment to a training course:

  • Become a full-time course member

of either a clinical or an applied programme

  • Clinical Associates

A Clinical Associate would already hold a professional qualification, e.g., as a psychiatrist, psychologist or social worker.

We can offer the opportunity for you to complete a lengthy clinical training course on a flexible basis, or add specialist training to an existing professional qualification. The agreement to offer an applicant a clinical associate programme is subject to CV and interview, through which suitability, previous experience, and fluency in English would be assessed. International students generally pay double the fee for EU and UK students, for whom additional funding from the Higher Education Funding council can be claimed.

Clinical associates may undertake supervised clinical work, provided they are suitably qualified and experienced professionals. The programme can be undertaken on a full or part-time basis. You will need to write to the relevant Tavistock directorate: Adult, Adolescent, CAMHS or the Portman Clinic. If in doubt, please write to Trudy Klauber, Dean of Postgraduate Studies, in the first instance: tklauber@tavi-port.org
  • Programme Associates

This part-time attachment provides access to lectures, seminars and workshops but excludes clinical work. It is suitable for professionals whose clinical qualifications are not recognised in the UK but who are interested in furthering their understanding of our approaches to work in mental health. A programme of teaching events from one or more of our postgraduate courses can be created according to interests and experience as well as time available to the associate. The programme is best taken for one academic year, starting in October, or for six months at least. One-term programmes can be designed. Fees for programme associates are linked to the programme/course from which most modules are chosen. This is usually around £2,500 for  EEA students and £5,000 for non-EEA nationals.

New UK Immigration Rules from April 2009 From April 2009

New UK points-based immigration arrangements require us to issue a visa letter to all non-EEA students offered a place on a course at the Tavistock and Portman. This visa letter will enable students to apply for a visa or extend existing visas. Students are advised to submit a contact form or contact the Department of Education and Training for further advice about issuing visa letters.

Fees and Funding

Fees for Non-EEA students undertaking degree programmes are higher than those for UK/EEA students. Fee details for all courses are at the bottom of the page. For more fee related information click through to financial support. Your classification for fees will be determined in accordance with Home Office guidelines.

Students who are classed as 'home' for fee purposes

UK nationals, European Economic Area (EEA) nationals and others with full permission to work in the UK, or otherwise residing in the UK under special categories approved by the UK Government, may apply for our part-time courses.

For further advice follow the link to the UKCISA website which gives further guidance.

English language requirements

All our courses including those validated by our collaborative partners are delivered in English. The language of assessment and study is therefore in English. Students whose first language is not English and who have not studied in the English medium will be required to demonstrate they are able to understand and express themselves in English. Our normal requirement is IELTS 6.0 or 6.5 TOEFL IBT 91+ (min 18 in each component), depending on the course of study. We also accept many other English language qualifications including country-specific examinations.

In the case of applicants whose first language is not English, then IELTS (or equivalent) is required. International qualifications will be checked for appropriate matriculation to UK Higher Education postgraduate programmes.

Distance and E-Learning

The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust has a growing distance and e-learning portfolio, making it easier for our students to access our training off-campus at a location of their choice. To find our more go to the Where can I study section of the website.

Visitors’ Programmes

We are able to arrange visitors’ programmes for groups and individuals for single days or up to one or two weeks. These are usually arranged by specific clinical department managers. They may include attendance at Trust lectures or seminars and some specific training events designed to meet the needs of groups. Send through a Contact Form  or make an enquiry with one of our clinical departments. There will be a fee for visitors that can be quoted once an initial programme is identified.
