Social workers at The Tavistock Clinic are all professionally qualified social workers which usually consists of a degree and a 2 year professional training. Before coming to the Trust, they have worked for a number of years in a variety of agencies such as child care services, mental health work, hospital and health care and probation. They have advanced experience and qualifications in specialised fields such as child care practice, family therapy, and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Some have been teachers of social work in universities.
They work within the multi-disciplinary clinical teams in the Child and Family Department, the Adolescent Department, and the Adult Department and they advise on social work matters and according to their speciality, they see patients and their families for clinical assessments and treatment. Some social workers specialise in forensic psychotherapy in The Portman Clinic.
Social workers provide a wide range of training courses relevant to modern social care practice and contribute to the organisational and consultancy work of the Trust. The social work discipline is also involved in a wide range of policy developments, and initiatives to promote the importance of therapeutic approaches in social care.
