Most of the doctors working in the Trust are psychiatrists. In addition there are 2 GPs who work as teachers and clinicians in The Tavistock Clinic while continuing their duties in primary care surgeries.
In The Tavistock and Portman Foundation Trust there are three branches of psychiatry: child and adolescent psychiatry, psychiatric psychotherapy, and forensic psychotherapy. All the consultants and trainees belong to one of these. By the time they arrive at the Trust our medical trainees are already very experienced, most being specialist registrars. All medical training is the same until graduation (MB BS, or similar) which takes five to six years of study. Before specialising in psychiatry some junior doctors take other trainings, such as general practice, paediatrics or general medicine (around three years).
It takes six to seven years after that to train in psychiatry, including the final three and a half years in higher training as specialist registrars, the last step before becoming a consultant. In the Trust psychiatrists carry out many roles but they are most in demand when a clinical problem is complex or dangerous.
All trainees in the Trust have multi-disciplinary experience and supervision, but the psychiatric element of the training is provided by our consultants. The content of such training throughout the United Kingdom and Eire is laid down by The Royal College of Psychiatrists.
