Child psychotherapists undertake clinical work with infants, children, adolescents and their parents and carers, and provide consultation to a wide group of other professionals involved in the health, care and education of children and young people. This group includes health visitors, teachers, field and residential social workers, nursery workers, school nurses and community workers.
The training, whose national standards are set by the Association of Child Psychotherapists, involves 6 to 7 years of postgraduate study, and the profession is open to graduates with substantial prior professional experience with children, adolescents and their families. The training emphasises detailed observation as the starting point for understanding the development of relationships and utilises psychoanalytic theories of personality development and a knowledge of child development and theories of family dynamics.
Child psychotherapists are committed to working as members of multi-disciplinary teams. Their particular contribution is a focus on understanding the child's experience, assessing whether children and young people could make use of psychotherapy and in providing individual and group psychotherapy both long and short-term.
The Tavistock Clinic training in child psychotherapy is the largest in the UK and has many links with training developments both nationally and internationally. A partnership with a new training to be based in the North of England is underway.
Child psychotherapists in the Clinic are involved in teaching on many professional development courses within the Trust, for students who work directly themselves with children, young people, parents and families in education, social services, the NHS and the voluntary sector.
