Tavistock Clinic

Clinical work sometimes highlights issues wider than the individual or family. Systems and organizations caring for ill or vulnerable people sometimes themselves have difficulties.

Staff may be affected by the complex and often emotionally powerful issues they have to deal with; they may lose their creativity and commitment, or leave the helping professions altogether. Problems can arise in finding the best ways to manage the work, or to work together effectively as a team.

So mental health service delivery depends not just upon the clinical skills of the individual practitioners but also on the 'mental health of the organization'. The Trust has developed a specialist interest over many years in the healthy functioning of teams, groups and organizations. Each department of the Trust supports its clinical work by offering a consultancy service to a wide range of public and independent service organizations. We can help with issues of management, team relationships and collective decision-making.

We may consult on issues of policy and service planning both nationally and locally; at the level of organisational and team relationships and on clinical work. We offer these services to individuals or groups seeking help with particular clinical or organisational issues; local services, such as schools struggling with an aspect of their service; other trusts and local authorities and national/professional bodies.
