On the Cusp: Working with Parents and Families in the Tavistock Under Fives Service

Friday 6 June 2008
Fee: £130 (£110 if booked by 9 May 2008)
Venue: Tavistock Centre

There is little dispute that in families, the quality of parenting and the psychological health of each parent and of the parental  couple has a profound effect on the development of children.

This conference describes a range of work with families that is carried out in the Under Fives Service at the Tavistock Clinic, with a particular focus on working with parents. Working with families of young children faces professionals with the challenge of crossing boundaries from one mode of intervention to another, often within the same clinical session. The focus of attention can shift between parent, couple, family and individual in order to gain an understanding of the underlying difficulties presented. Very often the parents' difficulties take centre stage and it may be difficult to keep the child in mind. The multidisciplinary nature of the team draws on different theoretical perspectives and these will be described and discussed in the course of the day.

In addition to the clinical work undertaken with parents and  families, the Under Fives Service also offers group consultation to a range of practitioners from a variety of professional backgrounds, who work both in the statutory and voluntary sector with parents, to help them with their parenting. Themes that arise from this work, including a discussion of key skills required when working with parents, will be presented.

The conference welcomes those working with families of young children within the statutory and voluntary sector, including Sure Start, health visitors, nursery workers and child psychotherapists.
