Friday 5 - Saturday 6 September 2008
Fee: £250
Venue: Tavistock Centre, London
The relationship between body and mind is one of the most fundamental philosophical problems, and the body is central to psychodynamic theory as well as to the practice of many therapies. Differing approaches to therapeutic technique have sometimes obscured theoretical convergences, so that practitioners have not benefited from findings in related fields.
This innovative conference will bring together internationally known speakers from a variety of disciplines - basic research as well as clinical practice. Each speaker will take a different perspective on thought in relation to the body. The discussion that follows will be introduced by someone working in a different field. The aim is to encourage a meeting across disciplines and to stimulate participants to make integrations that will enrich their approach to theory and practice.
In addition to the main presentations, there will be the opportunity to discuss in small groups or to attend workshops on a variety of topics. These will include Body Dysmorphic Disorder, Gender Identity Dysphoria, psychosomatics, a bodily approach to learning disability and the relationship between emotional containment and biology.
This conference will be of interest to psychoanalysts, child and adult psychoanalytic psychotherapists, child development researchers, movement therapists, music therapists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, educational therapists and play therapists as well as to others with an interest in the relationship between body and mind.
