Psychotherapy, Medicine and the Body: Alexis Brook Memorial Conference

Friday 31 October 2008
Fee: £70
Venue: Tavistock Centre, London

This conference was inspired by the work of Dr Alexis Brook (1920-2007), Consultant Psychotherapist in the Tavistock Clinic for 15 years (1971-85) and Chairman of the Professional Committee for the last 6 years of these. He pioneered the integration of psychoanalytic understanding in a variety of clinical settings thus extending the range of psychotherapeutic work. In primary care he systematically studied the contribution of psychotherapists working within GP practices - inspiring many to follow a similar path. Working as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist, he made a significant contribution to the theory and practice of psychosomatic medicine, particularly in Gastro-Intestinal Disorders and Ophthalmology. He also had a long standing interest in the study of emotional stress at work and within organisations.

The conference begins with papers by colleagues detailing Alexis Brook’s contribution in these various fields. Over the course of the day the presenters will show how this foundation has developed with particular reference to current psychotherapeutic approaches to eye conditions, gastro-intestinal disorders and chronic pain. Papers will discuss not only specific psychosomatic cases but also the wider interactional dynamics within the broader medical system.

This conference will be of interest to psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, counsellors, GPs and clinicians working in a variety of medical settings, particularly those with an interest in chronic pain, gastro-intestinal disorders, eye conditions and those who work in primary care.

The Tavistock Clinic is pleased to host this memorial conference in collaboration with the Association of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists (APP), St Mark's Hospital, The Eye and Mind Society and The Balint Society, in honour of Dr Alexis Brook.
