The Tavistock Clinic Public Lecture Series regularly tackles themes of public interest which can be illuminated by attention to psychological and developmental insight. This year we have planned a series looking at the meaning of crime, the relationship between criminal and victim, and social responses to criminal behaviour.
There is a profound connection between states of minds, including those of the mentally ill, and criminal acts. One of the disturbing facts much highlighted in recent years is the very high level of mental illness in the prison population. Similarly high is the proportion of offenders whose early history includes major losses, emotional and economic deprivation and periods in care. Public attitudes to crime and the criminal cover a wide spectrum from angry retaliation to reform and re-education. What would constitute a realistic penal policy in the light of what we can understand about criminality?
How, indeed, can we better understand both the criminal and what makes a person at risk of committing criminal acts? Why is it so difficult to think about crime without resorting to platitudes and prejudice?
Our distinguished lecturers are drawn from many spheres of public life - criminologists, those involved in administering the justice system, writers and others who have contributed to the intense ongoing public debate in politics and the media. Following the lectures there will be an opportunity for audience questions and debate.
