Approximately one in four people in the UK have a mental health condition. This means that you probably have a family member, friend or work colleague who has a mental health condition.
It could be depression, the most common reason for visiting the GP. Or it could be stress, something we can all admit to feeling at times. Perhaps it's an eating disorder, dementia or bi-polar disorder. At the Tavistock & Portman we recognise that mental ill health can be as disabling as physical illness, and that it affects not only individuals but also those around them. We are committed to advancing mental health and emotional well-being.
As a member you have a say in how we do things. You can get involved in a variety of ways and have many opportunities to let us know your views. Ultimately your involvement will mean that we can make sure we provide services that meet your needs, and the needs of your family and community. It’s your NHS and we’re giving you the opportunity to take some control.
What does being a member mean?
As a foundation trusts we are accountable to the people we serve. We do this by being membership organisations. Our membership is made up of our patients and their families, our students, our staff and our local communities. Our members elect governors to represent their views at independent boards where decisions about what we do and how we do it are made. This way we can respond to the needs of the people we serve.
Membership is free and you can become as involved as much or as little as you wish.
What do you get?
As a member of the Trust you will receive regular newsletters giving you updates about our work, about nation-wide changes to the NHS as well as helpful advice about your health and well-being.You’ll be invited to give your views about our current work as well as changes we plan to make and you’ll be invited to relevant events.
Once you’ve signed up you’ll be given access to the members section of our website where you’ll get regular updates, news and events and access to discussion forums where you’ll be able to share your views with us and other members.
As a member you will be eligible to elect governors to represent your views at Board level. Being a member also gives you the opportunity to apply to become a governor yourself.
