Race Equality Policy Statement

The Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust aims to provide the highest quality mental health services to patients, training for professionals, research and consultancy services, with strong integration among these elements.

In providing clinical and consultancy services, the Trust is committed to practices and policies which respect and take account of the experiences of minority ethnic groups, and their particular clinical and social needs. It is committed to continually developing the accessibility and sensitivity of its services to these populations, through monitoring, review, innovation and evaluation of the quality of provision, and programmes of staff development.

In its training provision for professionals working in the NHS and other public sector settings, the Trust has a commitment to developing the skills, capabilities and sensitivities required for mental health practice and management in a multi-racial society. The Trust recognizes that there are economic, social, institutional and attitudinal obstacles which may impede members of ethnic minority groups in their aspiration to train as professionals in the field of mental health. We also recognize that some minority ethnic groups have experienced disadvantage and discrimination as users of mental health and psychotherapy services. Accordingly, the Trust's
policy is to take positive steps to widen access for minority ethnic staff to its training programmes, ensure that its training programmes are subject to continuing review and development in respect of the understanding and skill required to work effectively in a multi-racial society, and to consult with service providers and commissioners of training to ensure that its provision remains relevant and progressive in these respects.

Training, clinical services and consultancy are all supported by, and inform, programmes of research and evaluation. The Trust is committed to developing research and evaluation which supports and enhances understanding of how racial difference and inequality can be addressed and worked with constructively in the context of direct service provision.
