Experience of mental illness –personal statement
“I have suffered all my adult life from clinical depression and have only ever been offered medication by the NHS. All my consultations with psychiatrists I have paid for myself, as I have for my years of psychotherapy. This, I understand, is a common experience for many people with clinical depression; when neither the life of the patient or public is threatened nor is there psychotic episode requiring hospital containment. I am now sure that being dyslexic and homosexual where contributing factors in my childhood and adolescence (when homosexual acts between men were illegal then) to my depression”.
