The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust has a worldwide reputation for therapeutic approaches in mental health in the public sector.
Besides a major commitment to outpatient clinical and forensic services in the London region, we provide many leading postgraduate training and academic courses for mental health and social care professions, undertake a range of important research activities, and provide a consultancy service which is used by professionals in the public and private sectors.
The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust was authorised on 1 November 2006. As a Foundation Trust we are regulated by Monitor and we are expected to engage closely with our patients, and the public, including local people and others across London and the UK. Patients and members of the public entitled to become members of the Foundation Trust and to stand for election as Governors. Governors, both elected and key stakeholders such as Camden Primary Care Trust or two of our university partners play a central role in steering the direction and development of the Trust, although the Trust is run by its Board of Directors.
We will still firmly remain part of the NHS, but will be able to operate more freely and with less central Government control. As a Foundation Trust we must demonstrate that we have sound business plans, and are able to use surplus income to pay for service or facility development and, if necessary, we can borrow money to improve our services, upgrade accommodation for staff and students, or to help us to develop new services. The Trust expects to expand as a Foundation Trust and to improve the quality of its clinical services, training, consultancy and research.
This Trust has consistently been rated "excellent" for its services and standards by the Healthcare Commission.
